Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy
Platelet rich plasma, also known as PRP, is a non-surgical solution for conditions such as ligaments/tendon sprains and tears, spinal conditions and arthritis. At Forrest City Medical Center, we may recommend PRP for the following conditions:
- Arthritis in the ankle
- Muscle and tendon injuries and tears such as Achilles tendonitis of the ankle
- Ankle sprains
- Plantar fasciitis
PRP therapy is a concentration of a patient’s own plasma that is injected into the damaged ligaments, tendons or joints. A small amount of blood is drawn and spun at high speed in a centrifuge, resulting in platelet rich plasma containing three to five times the concentration of platelets and healing factors. The plasma is injected or near the injury area with the aid of an ultrasound or X-ray.
PRP therapy is used to not only relieve symptoms but to potentially help in healing. It may also reduce the need for medication or surgery, improve pain relief and decrease inflammation all administered in an outpatient setting.
